One of a Kind Details...

Part of what made creating this home stay so much fun was collecting and creating furnishings to accessorize the space.  I love to chalk paint and have my own line of paint we sell downstairs at Nest Interiors.  I particularly love adding paper products as a detail.  This table I created is an old window from a house in New Orleans, cleaned and repainted with my paints "creole tomato" and "bubblegum snoball"; I added hair pin legs plus in each glass pane I decoupaged in pieces of a vintage Louisiana roadmap.
This sweet nightstand was a $15 bargain.  I mixed colors "spanish moss" and "oyster" for a custom color and then did a white wash.  Brand new "vintage style" hardware improved it too...the chevron paper inside; it's wrapping paper I saved!
This small 2H cabinet was gifted to me...and not in the best shape.  After gluing and clamping to get it structurally secure once again, I painted it in "cotton", a bright white.  …

Stay Here: Louisiana Renaissance Festival & More

As we are mid way through October, and now booked every weekend (yahoo!), I wanted to focus on November.  As it stands, we have two weekends available, the 10th and the 24th (which is the Saturday of Thanksgiving Week...also, available).  November begins one of my favorite events and honestly, I can't believe how close we are to it, to not take advantage of it...The Louisiana Renaissance Festival.  Every weekend though December will transport you to a simpler time.  Enjoy some ale and a turkey leg while you take in a show, buy handmade goods, and watch your kids play carnival style games.  Find out more at

Also, not to be missed...Small Business Saturday on November 24th.  No one does Shop Small better than Ponchatoula!  All merchants, including my shop, Nest Interiors, will participate in a rally day for independent business.  If you stay with us through Thanksgiving, I couldn't think of a better way to walk off all that gravy and start on that Christmas lis…

Trust Falls

Did you ever practice the exercise "trust falls"; the one where you fall back blindly, hoping the person, you may or may not even know, will catch you before you fall to the ground?

I was never a fan the couple times I attempted it...but that feeling was exactly the same feeling I had once our first guests checked in.  We had panicked so hard about getting it ready, stocked, super clean...we never thought about how it would feel for our guests (strangers!) to be in our home stay!

I'm happy to say we survived, our place survived...everything was more than fine.  In fact they were too good!  You could barely tell anyone had visited; they even made the beds!
And like that, we have our first 5 star review!  And as our next guests check in today, I'm feeling a lot better.  I know it will get easier and we are booked EVERY weekend this month, so I'll have lots of opportunities to fall and trust my guests have my back...and will come back!
The other side of this is I a…

This Could Be You...

My son's expression sums up what we hope all our guest experience when they stay with us!
We had a busy weekend finishing up last minute to-do's.  We are officially open for business now and 3 out of 4 weekends are booked in October!
A lot of people wanted to know what the kitchen looked like and what it included.  It took a while to complete partly because it was our staging area and then we refinished the floors.  But, as you can see, it includes a table with antique chairs (that table expands to fit 6).  The kitchen is a full kitchen with all the basics to feel at home.
Snacks and instant breakfast items are stocked.  And, of course, there's coffee...Community Coffee, a new Orleans favorite.  Tea, pumpkin spice hot chocolate and bottled water are also stocked!
The next most asked question was about what the bathroom looked like.  As you can see, it's a full bathroom with fluffy towels, and extras like shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
And a few extra treats for …

Test Night...

We played guest this weekend.  And though our Home Stay is not quite complete (Kitchen and Bath need to be finalized...and it's the most tedious!), we got to test all the beds!  The new mattresses are amazing but the biggest surprise...because my kids wouldn't go to sleep, I slept part of the night on the sofa pullout...and it's incredibly comfortable!
Other surprises, it had been a busy Saturday night in town.  The chamber put on it's annual Art and Wine stroll and we participated at our shop downstairs, Nest Interiors.  I thought, being on main street, it would be loud...and the cars were whooshing until about midnight and then it was like a night in the country.  The other remarkable thing was sunrise in the morning.  About 7am it creeps up over a stand of pine trees just down the street (that I've never noticed!).  The kitchen, even though, filled with boxes, paint cans, etc...was filled with the most beautiful light.

To me, the space feels vibrant, yet stil…

A Place for Everyone...

We are nearly there!  In fact we've opened up the booking (and we have a couple takers so far!)  Initially, when we began renovating our Home Stay, I had a solid concept - one cohesive look.  But each room evolved on it's own with a distinct personality.  Somehow, this eclectic mix works; it reminds me of a family, each person unique, working together.  And that's why I think this is the perfect place for a family, especially.
Take a look at our listing; more "professional" pics should be added in a week or so as we tie up last minute items.  And right now, we're offering 20% off your booking...but it's a limited offer.  So get clicking and visit!

Somewhere Between the Before & After

Here we are in August and I find we're somewhere stuck in the middle of our renovation...mainly because we ran out of steam.  the two bedrooms are nearly done  Above is the 1st bedroom.
In the second bedroom, I refurbished and chalk painted my old antique bed frame.  It's in a beautiful color, French Quarter Rain, from my own line of paint, Cottage Nest Paints.  Also, in the same room, will be an antique desk gifted to needed so much work but it looks like it will be an amazing piece.

This room needs a few more furnishings to finish it out, plus art and decor...but for both bedrooms the major painting and touch-ups are complete.  Next up will be the living room...
